To the stranger who bought my coffee:
You had no idea what kind of day I had already been having by 7:15.
You had no idea that I was on my 8th 15 hour day in a row, in need of some coffee beans.
You had no clue that I almost didn’t stop because I couldn’t waist any time.
You just thought you were paying it forward and helping a stranger, sparing me a few dimes.
You just wanted to do a favor for someone you’d never met
No thank you attached, no prior engagements, just a paid check.
Perhaps you looked back and saw the circles under my eyes.
Or maybe you noticed me trying to disguise my face while letting our exasperated sighs.
Maybe you were just returning a favor that someone had done for you.
As I pulled up to the window and expected the lady to say, “that’ll be 3.75” instead I was greeted with, “oh hun she took care of you.”
I looked ahead and saw the taillights of a black crv, and said “wow that was so sweet”
It was just another day, and a cup of plain coffee, but truly you don’t know what your kindness means.
As I paid for the coffee behind me, I smiled as I sipped the hot brew.
Because maybe after all it’s the little things that actually ring true.
